Chapter 218: IEEE Competition

So what exactly is IEEE? Same as you, I have absolutely no idea till the competition. Don't bother to google it, cause i had already done it and i will reveal it to u in no time! So stay tuned and get entertained in this version of NLZZ Times.

After morning assembly, I headed straight to the robotics room. We hanged around for awhile, packed stuffs, charged up laptops, and headed off for NUS shortly after in a bus. Yes, I missed all the lessons going on that day... I even had to do my GP test on friday instead...

So I carried the robot, Qixuan (qx) carried the lego set, Alvin carried the laptop. Well, thats for my group. There's still another 2 groups that went with us, so 9 people in total (for the benefit of those who have problems counting)

And my team members never fail to uphold the college's most-famous-feature - Mugging.
Alvin was studying Hydroxy compounds while Qx was doing his Electric Field Tutorial. After the bus ride, we finally arrived at NUS! The first thing we looked for is something that is very important to us! Guess what it is?

I bet you can never guess it, so i shall reveal the answer to u.

We went to the toilet!

Then I saw my sec sch classmate, Jiayang. I went up to say hi to him and found out that he's participating in the IEEE competition too. My initial thought was "oh dear, sure lose to him." In the end, my thought never changed.
We were desperately counting the number of people participating, the less the higher the chance of us winning LOL.
Another thing that excites my cca-mates are the vending machines, that serves sandwich! Alvin claimed that it is nice, but i didnt buy it.
Then, while sitting down and looking around, I saw that many people actually walked into the lift and tried to operate it.. but to no avail.. Awhile later, the next group of people came and they pressed the lift button. Nothing happens. They pressed again. Nothing. They pressed repeatedly this time. Nothing happens again. When they walked out, another group entered 3 secs later... Just when will people realise that the lift is not working...

Then, Ryan asked us to wait for the organisers to come and "collect" us. After a while, nothing happens. So I turned to Ryan and asked him "Ryan, where are the collectors?"

After more moments, the collectors finally arrived. Then we realised that this competition was a student-initiated-project.

We followed them to the lecture hall. This was when we realised that there are around 10 teams only. We were very happy to know this fact. We can actually write in our SGC (Singapore Graduation Certificate) that we have emerged top 10 in the NUS IEEE Competition.
Then the organisers gave us inspiration to write for our SGC! He said that we're the pioneer batch in IEEE competition. This is what he said "We hold this IEEE competition every year, and you guys are the pioneer batch." So we can write in our SGC that we are the pioneer batch in IEEE competition and we managed to achieve top 10 position! Which is actually a great deal! No simple human can achieve that.

Oh, they gave us the questionaire with one of the question: What is IEEE?
LOL thats exactly what i wanted to know, and i hope to hear it from them...
So I googled it and found out that it is "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers" Interesting...
I thought it stands for "Innovative Enterprise Entertaining Exciting"

So we hanged around, did the robots, scanned thru the competition route etc.. After all that can be done, it seemed that everything cant be done. Our programming doesnt obey us, or is it the robot... It just refuses to either follow the line or respond appropriately to the ultrasonic sensor.
So we cried. (joking)

Desperate times call for desperate measures. This was what my ex-cca-mate told me but i forgot who it is. So we have to execute the most desperate measure that we could - hardcore programming. Instead of following the line, we made the robot move straight, left, right etc according to the route we see LOL. As measurements were not taken, I did not think our plan will work though...

So we went back in to the Lecture Theatre (LT) as time is up. We sat there, waiting to be called. When we are called, we went out. The person tried to explain things about the timing, but qx told him that there is no need for timing as we will not reach the finishing line. The organiser keeps asking us to believe in ourselves, until the stage where he saw our robot running...
The first run was horrendous, the second run was out of the path within seconds! So I suppose he understood what we meant when we say we'll never reach the finishing line. I have calculated that the probability of us reaching the finishing line is exactly 0%.
When our friends asked us how we did, I said that "Our group has the maximum.. entertaining value."
We even imagined the news brining up our robot run during the entertainment news section! Cause our robot is fail to the extent that it is very entertaining, looking at it running randomly, storming out of the path etc...

Below is an artist's impression on the TV:
"We interupt this program to bring you Singapore's most entertaining news today! *Shows our robot run in the competition*

Ok, enough of the joke. We then went to the canteen to have our lunch. The food there beats AJ Canteen hands down. Alvin had a great deal at the canteen too. His food costs $4. He gave the vendor $10 and got a $7 change.

Then we headed back to the LT. Results were announced. Teams that went through are HCJC, TJC, RJC, NUS High, AJC Team 1, Republic Poly(i think)
They went into the 2nd round of the competition.

Shortly after, we were given the license to leave. The certificate of participation will be passed to us when we meet on friday thru the Team 1 people who went thru. (Team 2 and 3 didnt went thru, and i am not in team 1)

Oh, I forgot to mention that qx had been designing lots of cca tee when awaiting the results. He drew a design for each member in the robotics group. They were all hilarious.

So we left thru cab. And thankfully, claiming is allowed in all ways.
After cabbing back, my friend asked the taxi uncle if he can print a receipt showing a higher price than the stated amount, so that we can scam the claim. The uncle said that it was only possible last time where receipts are offered handwritten.. now, with the advancements of technology, receipts are computer-printed.. so no room for corruption. Well, he was just joking, relax. We're nice people that wont scam $$.

Alvin then went to find Mr Sng to claim the money and collect the key to open the robotics room, so that we can deposit the robots and legos.
He was questioned by Mr Sng about the competition. Alvin said that we have won the top 10!
Then the most-unwanted and worrying question came from Mr Sng... "How many teams were there in the competition?" He replied "10." Then Mr Sng was shocked and asked "then u tell me u came in top 10?" Alvin replied again "Ya, we came in top 10."

[P.S. Above conversation is only done through illustration by Alvin as I was not present when the conversation occured.]

Basically thats about it. Thanks for viewing.
