Chapter 219: Weekend Review

Man Utd beat Wigan 4-0 away!!! It was tense. Hernandez scored the 1st goal at 17th minute. Then, the opposition started to threaten the lead... requiring Van Der Sar to pull back-to-back excellent saves! The drought lasts till around 74th minute when Hernandez doubled the lead. Then, Rooney put in a 3rd goal, courteousy of a pass from Berbatov. Fabio scored his first goal to make it 4-0 and the 3 points are sealed in the plastic bag!
They'll be playing Chelsea midweek, Liverpool weekends... Tough fixtures..

Just had pizza for dinner! Like finally. I ate hawaiian pizza at my grandparents house! And that is after I did my GP Comprehension homework.

On a side note, the holidays are coming... but i foresee the pouring of homework soon... Teachers are not gonna let us off easily... they'll make it a point to make u suffer during the holidays~~

Hopefully, Chinese lessons will end... its been a pain staying back for Malay lessons... and now they're kicking in Chinese lectures... the bad thing is that Chinese A levels are already over... and hopefully that's the last time I'm doing a Chinese paper. I dont know if there's still chinese lesson tmr.. I hope not.. then i can have more time to revise my chemistry and maths.

Chapter 218: IEEE Competition

So what exactly is IEEE? Same as you, I have absolutely no idea till the competition. Don't bother to google it, cause i had already done it and i will reveal it to u in no time! So stay tuned and get entertained in this version of NLZZ Times.

After morning assembly, I headed straight to the robotics room. We hanged around for awhile, packed stuffs, charged up laptops, and headed off for NUS shortly after in a bus. Yes, I missed all the lessons going on that day... I even had to do my GP test on friday instead...

So I carried the robot, Qixuan (qx) carried the lego set, Alvin carried the laptop. Well, thats for my group. There's still another 2 groups that went with us, so 9 people in total (for the benefit of those who have problems counting)

And my team members never fail to uphold the college's most-famous-feature - Mugging.
Alvin was studying Hydroxy compounds while Qx was doing his Electric Field Tutorial. After the bus ride, we finally arrived at NUS! The first thing we looked for is something that is very important to us! Guess what it is?

I bet you can never guess it, so i shall reveal the answer to u.

We went to the toilet!

Then I saw my sec sch classmate, Jiayang. I went up to say hi to him and found out that he's participating in the IEEE competition too. My initial thought was "oh dear, sure lose to him." In the end, my thought never changed.
We were desperately counting the number of people participating, the less the higher the chance of us winning LOL.
Another thing that excites my cca-mates are the vending machines, that serves sandwich! Alvin claimed that it is nice, but i didnt buy it.
Then, while sitting down and looking around, I saw that many people actually walked into the lift and tried to operate it.. but to no avail.. Awhile later, the next group of people came and they pressed the lift button. Nothing happens. They pressed again. Nothing. They pressed repeatedly this time. Nothing happens again. When they walked out, another group entered 3 secs later... Just when will people realise that the lift is not working...

Then, Ryan asked us to wait for the organisers to come and "collect" us. After a while, nothing happens. So I turned to Ryan and asked him "Ryan, where are the collectors?"

After more moments, the collectors finally arrived. Then we realised that this competition was a student-initiated-project.

We followed them to the lecture hall. This was when we realised that there are around 10 teams only. We were very happy to know this fact. We can actually write in our SGC (Singapore Graduation Certificate) that we have emerged top 10 in the NUS IEEE Competition.
Then the organisers gave us inspiration to write for our SGC! He said that we're the pioneer batch in IEEE competition. This is what he said "We hold this IEEE competition every year, and you guys are the pioneer batch." So we can write in our SGC that we are the pioneer batch in IEEE competition and we managed to achieve top 10 position! Which is actually a great deal! No simple human can achieve that.

Oh, they gave us the questionaire with one of the question: What is IEEE?
LOL thats exactly what i wanted to know, and i hope to hear it from them...
So I googled it and found out that it is "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers" Interesting...
I thought it stands for "Innovative Enterprise Entertaining Exciting"

So we hanged around, did the robots, scanned thru the competition route etc.. After all that can be done, it seemed that everything cant be done. Our programming doesnt obey us, or is it the robot... It just refuses to either follow the line or respond appropriately to the ultrasonic sensor.
So we cried. (joking)

Desperate times call for desperate measures. This was what my ex-cca-mate told me but i forgot who it is. So we have to execute the most desperate measure that we could - hardcore programming. Instead of following the line, we made the robot move straight, left, right etc according to the route we see LOL. As measurements were not taken, I did not think our plan will work though...

So we went back in to the Lecture Theatre (LT) as time is up. We sat there, waiting to be called. When we are called, we went out. The person tried to explain things about the timing, but qx told him that there is no need for timing as we will not reach the finishing line. The organiser keeps asking us to believe in ourselves, until the stage where he saw our robot running...
The first run was horrendous, the second run was out of the path within seconds! So I suppose he understood what we meant when we say we'll never reach the finishing line. I have calculated that the probability of us reaching the finishing line is exactly 0%.
When our friends asked us how we did, I said that "Our group has the maximum.. entertaining value."
We even imagined the news brining up our robot run during the entertainment news section! Cause our robot is fail to the extent that it is very entertaining, looking at it running randomly, storming out of the path etc...

Below is an artist's impression on the TV:
"We interupt this program to bring you Singapore's most entertaining news today! *Shows our robot run in the competition*

Ok, enough of the joke. We then went to the canteen to have our lunch. The food there beats AJ Canteen hands down. Alvin had a great deal at the canteen too. His food costs $4. He gave the vendor $10 and got a $7 change.

Then we headed back to the LT. Results were announced. Teams that went through are HCJC, TJC, RJC, NUS High, AJC Team 1, Republic Poly(i think)
They went into the 2nd round of the competition.

Shortly after, we were given the license to leave. The certificate of participation will be passed to us when we meet on friday thru the Team 1 people who went thru. (Team 2 and 3 didnt went thru, and i am not in team 1)

Oh, I forgot to mention that qx had been designing lots of cca tee when awaiting the results. He drew a design for each member in the robotics group. They were all hilarious.

So we left thru cab. And thankfully, claiming is allowed in all ways.
After cabbing back, my friend asked the taxi uncle if he can print a receipt showing a higher price than the stated amount, so that we can scam the claim. The uncle said that it was only possible last time where receipts are offered handwritten.. now, with the advancements of technology, receipts are computer-printed.. so no room for corruption. Well, he was just joking, relax. We're nice people that wont scam $$.

Alvin then went to find Mr Sng to claim the money and collect the key to open the robotics room, so that we can deposit the robots and legos.
He was questioned by Mr Sng about the competition. Alvin said that we have won the top 10!
Then the most-unwanted and worrying question came from Mr Sng... "How many teams were there in the competition?" He replied "10." Then Mr Sng was shocked and asked "then u tell me u came in top 10?" Alvin replied again "Ya, we came in top 10."

[P.S. Above conversation is only done through illustration by Alvin as I was not present when the conversation occured.]

Basically thats about it. Thanks for viewing.

Chapter 217: Weekend Review

Welcome to yet another session of our Weekend Review!

Soccer news up first.

Man Utd won 1-0 against Crawley Town. They filed second stringers, most of whom had no idea what they're doing at all... lucky they managed to scrap a victory.
Everton beat Chelsea 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Quite a surprising result to me.

News just came that I am required to skip Wednesday lessons... because of the NUS IEEE Competition which my cca will participate.. Sian, i just hate the idea of missing out on lessons... seriously... I just hope the teachers dont do much on that day... so i wont miss out alot... :X

Weekends always seem so short, while weekdays always seem so long... And homework is haunting me all day long... Though the March holidays are coming... I dont really think there can be ample rest. The teachers will try their very best to give us as much hmwk as possible i suppose... and in no time, we will have to embark on term 2...

Oh Budget 2011! The govt is giving money to the citizens.. but sadly I dont have a share :(

Oh, and I saw from iweekly that Jay will release a new album at May. Reports from my spies suggests that the release is done at May in relation to celebrate my birthday!

Chapter 216: Activities-packed-Wednesday

7853098436785912961478 things have happened today.
Removing those small/minor details like the leaves had dropped at ABC Street at XX:XX Time, we're left with approx 86184263855127618782 things to report on.
Of all those, we continue to eliminate those that do not happen in Singapore. Thus, we are down to 3147918052 events that occur locally.
Of all those, we eliminate those things that have in no way any single relation to the human species. Thus we're left with around 77620056 things to say.
Of course and fret not! I'm not gonna post all the 77620056 events that happened today. I'm just gonna report the most important parts and here it goes...

One fine day, I went to school. As usual, there'll be this bus stop where there is a high influx of foreigners onboard, decreasing the average distance of 2 people in the bus. The bus driver, as usual, keeps asking ppl to move in. Then came the ticket inspector just one stop before AJC. And we actually have to let her scan our ez-link cards and alight immediately after... it is troublesome, but the rules are there for us to follow.

Then came the first period, and it is called Economics. Did an essay practice. As many ppl didnt prepare the tutorial, my teacher said that we must have spent alot of time revising for the essay practice to the extent that we neglect our tutorials. So, he expects us to do well for that essay practice as we supposedly spent lots of time for it. Well, I thought in my mind: Since I have prepared the tutorial, I should have less time to revise for the essay practice, thus I could afford to not do well and have a valid reason to explain. How I wish the fire drill came in now... but to no avail.

Then came the Biology Tutorial where the fire drill went off... It is said that we should take all our valuables. As AJC is a supposedly mugger school, people should regard tutorials and lecture notes as valuables instead. Thus, they should take their whole bag with them and leave their wallets and phone in the class instead.
Obviously, that didnt happen lol.
So we evacuated to the Field and turned into a stone under the sun for approx 45 mins before returning to class for a 15 mins bio lesson.

Then came the favourite period of all time. Break.

Then came GP. Then it was bio remedial and then lunch.

Then I went for Maths Olympiad Selection Test with the double-olympiad boy (yian).
10 mcqs and 2 out of 4 questions that require a written answer, where working isnt needed.
The moment has finally arrived! It's time for me to flaunt my level 99 tikam-ing skills. There is a probability of 0.20 to get each MCQ question correct as there are 5 options :X But my tikam-ing skills effectively raise the chance of getting the question correct :) From the probability of 0.20 to 0.2000001.
And my maths skills have raised the probability from 0.2000001 to 0.2000005.
I think this test is a "just-go-for-fun-thing". Nothing will come out of it, I dont think i can make it to the olympiad at all lol.

Then came the Track and Field Duty. As time was pressing, I didnt change into the house tee, and head straight to the track. My job was simple, to sit down there, chant and collect CIP hours. (ok kidding)
Basically, my job is to see the runners cross the line and tell my friend the number tag that has passed, so that he could mark it (by ticking).

It was soon over and its time to get to the extreme.

CXTREME!

Went to robotics room. Nobody home. Went to room 213. No sign of humans. So i called Qixuan, who came out of room 214 and signalled me in. They're having orientation with the JC1s. They just ran around the sch while I arrange back the tables and chairs with a few CCA-mates. Well, I'm glad i missed those games LOL.
Went back to comp lab where we're dismissed. There, we have a choice to head to the robotics room to continue our preparation for the competition or head home. So I decided that we should take a gamble! We should toss a coin and let it decide our fate for the day.

"Heads we dont stay, Tails we leave" I said.

The coin resulted in a head! which meant that we dont stay, so we left.

If you didnt get the joke, go back and read what happens if tails was the result.

Oh, and Alvin forgot to give the cert to a member again.. So I volunteered to keep it for him. Then, I asked my CCA head "Do I get CIP hours for keeping this cert?"

Chapter 215: Weekend Review

Here we come to another session of the weekend review here at NLZZTimes. As always, the first focus of the review is for EPL soccer. Currently, Man Utd has beaten Man City 2-1! All thanks to goals from Nani and Rooney. As of press time, Arsenal is leading Wolves 2-0.. they'll win it probably, sad to say. And Liverpool is being held to a 1-1 draw currently.

The J1s in my sch seem to be overly enthusiastic... They arrive for lectures 15 mins before time... keeps on checking in the auditorium, disrupting jc2 lectures... They seem to have a very strong thirst for learning... They seem to be overly-excited for lectures... to the extent that they camp in the audi during JC2 lecture to wait for their lecture that follows...
Not only that, they have been prompt, or maybe "overly-early" during morning assembly.. They will start massing their numbers in the parade square several mintues before the bell goes... The normal people are the ones who start movement only after the bell sound..
Such enthusiasm is devoid from my batch during the JC1 days... Maybe we only have that enthusiasm within us in the first few weeks?
It is interesting to note that we arrive 10-15 mins late for lecture, while JC1s arrive 10-15 mins earlier for lecture -.-

Anyways, time will tell if their enthusiasm can last... A chinese saying goes "Road shake know horse power, day long see people heart" (路遥知马力, 日久见人心 <=> It takes time to discover the true someone.)
Well this reminds me of one of my favourite phrase "People mountain people sea water no entry." ”人山人海水泄不通“

Well the previous phrase is suitable to describe the situation where I went to the temple to pray earlier in the morning.

Chapter 214: Recent Events

Tuesday's PE was disastrous as we had to do 3 sets of 7 pullups.. And we have to follow the teacher's count and we had to extend our hands slowly at 5 counts :X
The end result of this is two aching arms, painful body and a tired mind. This is a newly derived equation by me, and it is not advisable to practice it as it causes a decrease in standard of living and quality of life.

And the misery continues... (Random: If only Mr. Chew was here to 'Chew the misery') We had to do some jumping exercise that results in weakened legs. And the best thing is the teacher actually asks us to run 3 rounds (approx 1.2km) in 6 mins after that... which is not really logical.

And the effects of the pain in my hands carry on to today's PE... which deterred me in my pullups... And my hand is still in pain now... I cant stretch my hands straight now or suffer immense pain!

Enough of PE, lets move on to GP.

My GP tutor has pictured the image that the HOD of GP is a scary fellow, that probably can be infamous for students' hatred towards him. My GP tutor said that if our files are not properly done, the HOD of GP is going to go after u. Whats worse is that she brought out the example of 2 students who are screwed up down left right center by him.
However, the reality is in huge contrast from imagination. After checking the files, he just made some comments (both bad and good things about our files), and just left without getting really pissed off with anything at all. And he said that filing is for our own good, for revision purposes in the GP subject.

To summarise the whole big chunk above: He isnt as scary as I thought and imagined.

How many marks do you get for leaving a question blank?

Why did a student get scolded for doing nothing?

Chapter 213: CNY Day 5

Today is the fifth day of CNY, but the break ends at the 4th day. Logically (and theoretically?), CNY lasts 15 days, so there should be 15 days of holidays!!!

It was a huge disappointment for me to watch Man U enter into their first loss of the campaign. To worsen the blow, they are the table toppers and they lost to a club at the rock bottom of the table (last of the table, 19 positions down for the benefit of those who work better with numbers) Quite unbelievable piece of fact. But there is a saying that the ball is round, anything can happen in football. Besides, Wolves had managed to topple big clubs this season as well... So.. maybe not that bad.

It was quite a joy to hear news of Liverpool beating Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge! This will widen the gap between Chelsea and Man U, which is beneficial for Man U's title race. The "betrayer" of Liverpool, as named by many L'pool fans, had failed to make an impact and was substituted in the 65 mins. What a laughable thing to hear.

Today during civics, we are doing on Total Defence and my group was doing Psychological Defence. It was indeed hilarious that my presentation focused all on pride and singing the national anthemn, but isnt that the truth? I said that "As a student, we're singing the national anthemn with pride. Like what we're doing every morning." Then I added, "We will serve the NS with pride and not because it is compulsory to do so." Then I continued "When we work, we will also work in Singapore and not work in other countries, cause we like Singapore!"

The part on "like what we're doing everyday" was said to create "effect" and impact for my presentation cause it isnt really true... lol, i did sing the national anthemn everyday, but whether with pride or not, I, myself, could not tell too...

The part about NS sounds exactly unlike me, but oh well... Its a presentation, I just could not ruin it.

The part about about working in Singapore and not in other countries IS ACTUALLY TRUE! Although I sounded abit sarcastic when I said it, I did it only to create the humour effect. In actual fact, I would definitely like to work in Singapore than other countries... I'm serious!!!

Econs lecture followed shortly after. There was an empty row of seats between the 1st row and 3rd row. Both are occupied by our class. Someone (i forgot who) asked why is there a gap. I replied that this is known as the social divide. When we decided to move up to the 2nd row, so that the "divide" is gone, I said that "We have bridged the social divide."

Chapter 212: Chinese New Year

Woke up around 12 noon. Off to maternal grandparents house first at around 2pm.
While in the car ride, I thought of this:

---

Recently, while I was browsing through my contacts with my phone, Yi An was beside me and saw: 1st Aunt, 2nd Aunt, 4th Aunt, 5th Aunt.
Now, do u have a thought going on in your mind?
Well, can u guess what question yi an asked me after seeing that?

Normal people should be able to guess the question he asked me. (or maybe not, cause he is a genius. Only genius people can guess it.)

He asked me "Then where is 3rd aunt?!?!?!"

I smiled a little and said

---

Ok lets get back to the story.

So I reached my maternal grandparents house and went to eat lunch there.
Then it was eating, sitting, walking, stoning, greeting, talking, receiving, profitting!

Well, after somewhile they were gambling.
I did not join in as I did not like to gamble. Years ago when i was just a little boy, i used to like gambling. As i age, I think that gambling is stupid and a waste of money (The probability of losing money is higher than winning in gambling). Now, I will not gamble as it brings alot of harm and almost no good. Gambling is bad and can cause serious/dire social and economic consequences. So do not gamble.

And then off to paternal grandparents house.

Hongbaos again of course. And of course the snacks.. like cashew nuts, Bak Kwa, etc etc.
Then I went to KFC with my cousins to eat dinner. I ate 2 chicken. Then there was 2 mashed potatos, 1 coleslaw, 1 unknown snack that comes in the ring shape and its fish, 1 packet of cheese fries. I pushed the 2 mashed potatos and 1 coleslaw to my elder cousin who obviously refused it. I said that the rest of us can handle the fries LOL.

The coleslaw and mashed potatos come in similar containers. So, it was difficult to differentiate them. My sis mistakenly said that the one that is cold is mashed potatos and coleslaw is hot. We got a shock obviously.

And the freaking ring shaped snack as mentioned above is made of FISH. Which straight away ruled me out from consuming it.

We ended up being very full at the end.. And went back to my paternal grandparents hse. Then we go to someone else's house (not the one in maplestory)

My elder cousin drove my sis, 2 cousins, his mum there.
My dad drove my grandma, me, my mum there.
We reached there and ate again LOL.
Other than that, we PROFIT of course!

Oh and there was a little boy there who asked us to play wii with him.. The game was some super-duper-advanced-generation-style-of-mario. This game is complex to the extent that we just couldnt ... IT MUST BE GENERATION GAP. We old people cannot play this new generation kind of mario... This mario game has a combination of alot of things... there is roller-coaster-style, snake-style, penguin, ride a pet, bomberman, etc all inside...
Its basically very profound... I guess we old people can only play the ancient type of Mario games.. which is very basic... without the snake, penguin, fire, all kind of funny wuzzy wthbbq shitz.

Ok enough of mario, its time we head home and so we did and that marks the end of CNY day 1.

Chapter 211: 3 Things about CNY

There are basically 3 main reasons why i like Chinese New Year. First of all, alot of food outlets are closed during that period except for FAST FOOD!!! So that means I dont have to eat slow food :)
The second reason is because of the all-time-favourite, and it is well known as holidays, which meant break from study! Only hmwk is there to spoil it however.
The third reason is simple and should be guessed by many. Free Cash! This is more efficient than cash converter or pawning gold.

Last night, I bought Jay Chou Concert DVD :)
And i slept at 11 and woke up at 4 only for one reason.
To watch 23 men chasing after the ball? No.
I woke up to see Man Utd vs Aston Villa!
I hoped that they dont lose, or i will smash up the TV set, considering the opportunity cost of waking up at 4 AM to watch the match.

While i was busy catching mouse with my iphone, Rooney scored at the 1st min. What a relief, maybe this just meant that i would not have woken up in vain. True enough, Rooney strikes again just before half time after Nani passed to him.
Then it struck me for a while when Bent scored against Man U, putting the scoreline to 2-1. Thankfully, Vidic struck at goal with his leg! (instead of head, like he usually does) 2 hours was well spent watching the 3-1 victory to Man U!

Then I stoned awhile before making preparations and off to school i GO!
Well, sch was practically a waste of time. All we do in sch is to take attendance and watch the CNY celebration concert. Thats it.

So I went home and ate KFC with my dad.

Tomorrow is the first day of CNY. So I wish all viewers a very happy Chinese New Year 2011!
